Ms. Ostrominski and Ms. Buchanan's students visited the library last week and were welcomed by Ms. Grindle and her new interactive touchscreen device. The Great Oaks library also received 45 Samsung tablets for student use while in the library. Our library is one of many digital libraries being piloted in the district this year. Students in Mr.s Rantz's room this year are helping RRISD pilot one-to-one technology devices. There is a cart of Samsung tablets for them to use throughout the year. There is a lot of learning going on and the students seem to be enjoying every minute of it. Third graders in Ms. Rantz's class have been working hard at Think Through Math this year! Think Through Math is a Web-based solution that provides adaptive math instruction for students in grades 3 through Algebra 1. Developed by teachers and technologists to help students prepare for rigorous Common Core and TEKSstandards and assessments, Think Through Math supports math achievement in unprecedented ways. Learn more about Think Through Math here. Ms. Wilson and Ms. McBride partnered up their classes and brought them through the steps required to sign into their RRISD Google email. Once the students had access to their gmail accounts, McBride and Wilson were able to share documents with each student via Google Mail and Drive to facilitate their Civil War research. Teachers shared previewed links with students who were able to browse, view videos and take notes with their Google Apps for Education (GAFE) accounts provided thru RRISD. Ms. McGee's second graders researched their family's heritage, and then created a representational doll out of clothes pegs. But they weren't quite finished. As a final project, the students uploaded pictures of their dolls into a PowerPoint Slide where they summarized their research. Students practiced research, writing and summarizing skills as well as technology skills such as importing and re-sizing pictures, manipulating fonts in size, color, location and type, and saving their digital work First grade classrooms are incubating eggs! And learning about spring! And researching mammals - specifically, CHICKENS! Ms. Bertul's class was in the Blue Lab on Wednesday this week adding to their knowledge of our feathered friends. As you can see they were listening, viewing, reading, writing and drawing. Lots of super-engaged learning going on in the first grade hallway! We can't wait for those eggs to hatch! Fifth grade students at Great Oaks Elementary contribute to the the morning KGOE news broadcast as anchors and technical support, but they also create book trailers which are aired throughout the year. Collaboration between teachers and librarian make the whole thing work. Students have the opportunity to share books through technology. Opportunities to interview other staff or promote causes and projects and happenings in the classroom are created and shared, too.
